Egypt’s Ministry of Transport has issued compulsory purchase orders for a series of land plots and real estate assets across Giza governorate, paving the way for new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) stations and the expansion of the Mariouteya Axis road corridor.
The measures, published in the Official Gazette on Sunday under two ministerial decrees signed by Transport Minister Kamel Al-Wazir, follow the failure to secure voluntary property transfer signatures from affected landowners and titleholders.
The decrees cover land needed for three BRT stations on the Greater Cairo Ring Road and for the Mariouteya Axis, with the affected properties spread across several areas of Giza.
Decree No. 479 of 2026 mandates the expropriation of 16 land plots totaling 24,791 square meters across three districts in Giza: Geziret Al-Dahab, Al-Konyasa, and Kafr Al-Gabal. The land will be used for Phase I construction of parking and interchange facilities serving passengers on the Greater Cairo Ring Road’s BRT network.
The order relies on Prime Ministerial Decree No. 3483 of 2023, which granted the BRT scheme official public utility status. Ownership ledgers compiled by the Giza Survey Directorate indicate the expropriation affects a combination of corporate entities—including the Nile Company for Construction and Building Materials—alongside private families and estate heirs.
According to the list of owners and land plots attached to the first decree, a total of 24,791 square meters will be expropriated for the three BRT stations, covering 16 plots across the three areas.
The expropriated land is owned by a mix of commercial entities, including Nile Company for Construction and Building Materials, as well as individual families and heirs.
The second decree, No. 480 of 2026, orders the expropriation of properties and land along the route of the Mariouteya Axis project, from its intersection with the Ring Road at Mariouteya to its intersection with the Middle Ring Road in Giza governorate.
The decree includes 19 detailed lists issued by the Giza Survey Directorate covering land and property owners in Nazlet Al-Ashtar, Harraniya, and Shabramant in Abu Nomros district, as well as Al-Shanbab and Saqqara in Badrashin district.
The measure is based on Prime Ministerial Decree No. 3479 of 2023, which designated the axis project as being in the public interest.
The two decrees, issued Aug. 3 and published on Sunday, require the relevant authorities to publish them in the Egyptian Gazette and deposit the lists with the appropriate real estate registration offices in Giza governorate. They take effect immediately.
