Essam Zakaria

Journalist, film critic, translator, and lecturer

Essam Zakaria specialized in Arts and Culture journalism for many years at Rosa Al-Youssef and Sabah Al-Kheir magazines, and has published articles in numerous Egyptian, Arab, and international publications. He also headed the Arts and Central Desk departments and served as a senior editor of several publications. He has authored and translated more than 20 books on Egyptian and international cinema, including literary works.

Zakaria serves on the juries of Egyptian, Arab, and international film festivals, and was the director of the Cairo International Film Festival (2024). Prior to that, he chaired the Ismailia International Film Festival throughout six editions (2017-2024). In the academic field, he has taught and lectured at colleges and schools, including the American University in Cairo, Ain Shams University, Raafat El-Meehy Academy, and the Jesuit School.
